PuroClean Goes Off-The-Grid For A Mould Restoration Job

There is a sort of mythology around the idea of being “off the grid”. Many people fantasize about the idea of moving far away, to the middle of nowhere, and restarting their life anew. But, we don’t often consider what it would mean if we needed professional assistance out there. Recently, a couple who owned a cottage about hour and a half away, called us requesting water restoration. When we arrived, we didn’t find water, but rather mould.

Where’s the Water? That… is Mould

We arrived from our 90-minute trek expecting to deal with water damage. But, our plans changed when no water was discovered at all. Despite being somewhat confused, and knowing there had been a problem, our techs pressed on and found significant mould growth under the subflooring. This new development called for a change in strategy. We needed to set up containment between the upstairs and downstairs levels, and transfer the contents and furniture upstairs. With all of that out of the way, we proceeded to remove the layers of flooring and subflooring. First, our team found the plywood subfloor was wet. And then there was water in the cups of the underlying dimple board. Once we had removed those two layers we found water on the concrete floor. A major challenge presented during this job (and a frequent issue) was the limited sources of electrical power. But Being in such a remote area, electricity was provided by solar panels and a single tank of propane gas for the generator. Furthermore, this job took place in December when sunlight is limited, which meant so was electricity. But, the ‘fun’ didn’t end there. The remote backroads became impassable after about a week, as they were not plowed. This made our travel more complicated and hindered our ability to even get a waste bin on site.Despite the mounting conditions, we worked diligently to remove all the wet and mouldy materials. However, the source of the water could not be identified at the time, and so we will need to return to the home in the spring to find the leak. The homeowners were so grateful that we came out to help them manage the mould issue and we look forward to helping them solve the mystery of the water source once and for all.
